the diode protects from reverseBiasing the below transistor that becomes of -5V. I will need to raise the resistors of voltage divider at 1.8K also to allow 1.x mA to pass over the LEDs. Are these transistors both in saturation?

Needs a bit more work.

Can you please tell me a little bit more, BillyT? Thank You! :)

As the circuit stands, neither led will light under any circumstance, adjusting the led resistors don't help either. Using low current Leds (2mA @ 2V) it is possible to get the circuit to function. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/6106748200157184

I understand your point. Thank you also for pointin out to your circuit. I adjusted the LEDs voltage; but I will need to let the circuit as it is, just to see for my self in a practical example if my LEDs are being lit. :)
