this circuit allows you to control the current going into a heating element (the 3 Ω resistor). By adjusting the potentiometer, you can adjust the duty cycle from 0 to 100% and so you can adjust the average power going into the heating element. Normally if you build this circuit, you don't need any external PSU

Here's a setup using a 555 timer as a boost converter and the switch pops the light......like turning on the spark gap occilator for a gas ignition. https://everycircuit.com/circuit/5754468838801408
