Find Polarity of Unmarked Battery Terminals - Old School Method

A glass jar with water and a pinch of salt is mixed up. Bare wire ends of wire from each wire are lowered into salt water. DO NOT LET BARE WIRES TOUCH EACH OTHER. More bubbles will form on the negative terminal lead.

That is a fun experiment. I love to do it with 12v or more volts, it gets more intense. Lol. By the way, I love doing the opposite, which creates power from two different terminal metals in salt water(Cu is positive, and Zn is negative). I've done that and made an red LED light up. :-)

The electrolysis method. Indeed old school.

Bubbles will appear at both terminals and be carefull because this gas is incredible flamable

It's not much of a problem. I've tried this up to 30V. Given a saturated NaCL solution it draws no more than 1A (since that was the current limiting of my PSU) and the bubble generation is not so concentrated, so it's not very volatile. There's no combustion hazard really.

With Hf, say 21Mhz, you get bubbles too, but as it is ac, it shouldnt be electrolysis. The amount of salt will give you an impedance you like. Can be used as dummyload for high power...
